On the 22nd of October, a group of leading AI scientists released a statement calling for an immediate stop to the development of superintelligent systems. The statement is strongly agreed and supported by numerous people, including Steve Wozniak, the Co-founder of Apple, and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex.
What these people are asserting is that we should firmly prohibit the development of superintelligence that is far more advanced than the AI we use nowadays. This superintelligence could not only harm humans’ independent thinking but also cause us to lose our role in society. According to the "Statement on Superintelligence", experts clearly acknowledge that innovation has positive sides. But, many companies are aiming to make AI surpass the human abilities in various cognitive tasks, which may bring disastrous results.
In October 24, 8:30 PM (KST), more than 30,900 people have signed the petition supporting this statement.
Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and co-founder of the Archewell Foundation, stated, “The future of AI should serve humanity, not replace it. The true test of progress will be not how fast we move, but how wisely we steer.”
