Jeonbuk Hyundai tied the match against Gangwon FC, extending its undefeated streak to 26 matches (20 wins and six draws). As the match was held at home, however, it was regrettable that the team failed to secure victory.
The match was held on Aug. 20 at Jeonju World Cup Stadium, and the result was a 1-1 draw. Jeonbuk continued its record of 26 consecutive undefeated matches, but its plan to grab the first leg and comfortably enter the second leg went awry. On the contrary, Gangwon continued its hopes of making it to the finals for the first time by garnering a valuable draw in a difficult away match. The second leg of the two teams will be held at Gangneung High1 Arena on Aug. 27.
Jeonbuk caught the flow of the game first. In the third minute of the second half, Kim Young-bin scored the first goal with a header in the free kick situation, but Gangwon did not back down. Gangwon responded with active movements even though the main players were absent, and Koo Bon-cheol scored an equalizer in the 17th minute of the second half to balance it. Since then, Jeonbuk has added additional strikers to attack, but Gangwon held on to the defense until the end and the game ended 1-1.
The final match of the Korea Cup will be held on Dec. 6 at Seoul World Cup Stadium.
