The Samsung Lions defeated the SSG Landers in the first round of the semi-playoffs on October 11. Samsung’s starting pitcher was Choi Won-tae, while Mitch White started for SSG. Originally, Drew Anderson was scheduled to start, but he was ruled out due to food poisoning. The opening game of the semi-playoffs is considered crucial, as the team that wins Game 1 has an 85.3% chance of advancing to the next round.
In the top of the first inning, leadoff hitter Lee Jae-hyun hit a solo home run on the very first pitch of the game. In the third inning, Kim Young-woong added a two-run homer, extending Samsung’s lead to 5–0. Choi Won-tae delivered a stellar performance, pitching six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, allowing only two hits and one walk. In the bottom of the eighth inning, SSG loaded the bases with two outs, but Samsung pitcher Lee Ho-song induced a groundout and escaped the situation. Closer Kim Jae-yun then sealed the victory in the ninth. Interestingly, Choi Won Tae, who had often struggled in previous postseason appearances, showed remarkable composure and command in this game.
After the game, Choi said he was happy to help the team win and apologized for his poor performance during the regular season. Samsung Lions manager Park Jin-man praised Choi’s effort and expressed confidence ahead of the next matchup.
