The Gloria funicular, with its distinctive yellow carriages, is in ruins after it derailed and crashed on September 3rd. With killing at least 16 people and injuring 21.
The cable railway has carried locals and visitors up and down a steep street. But on Wednesday, just as the evening rush hour was starting, one of the circular trains derailed down the street and crashed into a building.
Local authorities say it is too early to determine the cause of the incident. However, the Lisbon Firefighters Regiment reported that a cable detached along the line, causing the funicular to lose control and crash into a neighboring building. Since the incident occurred on a 200-meter steep hill, the damage is expected to be extensive.
As the scale of the incident increased, the nation declared three days of mourning. Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa offered his condolences to the families affected by the incident. Since the cable railways were designated as a national monument, and around three million passengers board carriages each year, it came as a shock to many people.
