A Chinese revolutionary technology has brought in a transparent coating that turns normal windows into highly effective solar energy harvesting panels. Using liquid crystal film the semi-transparent solar concentrator is used to reflect and direct circularly polarized sunlight. This allows electricity to be generated by means of windows without obstructing the passage of natural light or changing the look of buildings.
This new coating allows buildings to harness solar power without loss of design integrity or functional performance over traditional solar panels that are typically opaque and may command significant spatial allocations The central technology operates through the funnelling of light into the photovoltaic cells embedded in the window frame and thus converting the energy trapped into electrical energy.
It provides high potential for city centers in which spatial constraints are prevalent and the incorporation of renewable energy is inevitable. By the process of converting available building surfaces into energy-providing resources, cities can reduce their carbon emissions and move towards achieving sustainability objectives.
As technology is still in its infancy stages of development its impact on the future of green architecture is deep. If it were to be commercialized, this clear solar coating can change the way buildings generate and consume energy paving the way for smarter eco cities.
