At least 81 people died in San Angelo, Texas, due to catastrophic floods along the Concho River, which overflowed after heavy rainsswept through several towns, damaging roads and entire communities; meanwhile, rescue operations for missing children from a summer camp are ongoing, and concerns about further floods are increasing.
Officials report that many of the victims were children attending summer camps located near the riverbanks. The National Guard, with other emergency and medical teams, is searching for survivors.
Rafael Gomez, Texas Governor, has declared a state of emergency, and President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Texas on July 9 to meet with officials and assess the damage. Temporary shelters for victims have been set up in nearby towns and cities to assist those who lost their homes in the disaster.
Local governments urged residents to stay away from flood areas, as more rain is coming to Texas. Including floods in Texas, some experts warn that as climate change progresses, the frequency of such extreme weather events increases.
