The predominant concern, climate change, is a result of human activities. Scarcity of green spaces and the widespread presence of concrete and asphalt increase the heat unbearably.
It is especially concerning for tropical Eastern Asian cities, which have humid conditions.
Due to the limitation of human activities, it is expected to have a negative impact on productivity as well, resulting in a decrease in the median city’s gross domestic product by 2050. Corresponding to the anticipated economic stagnation, large metropolitan areas in Southeast Asia with warmer climates are suffering significant economic slowdowns during this summer.
The situation has spread an awareness to local leaders and citizens to implement strategies that promote urban greening and an agenda for heat resilience. Strategic planning, such as cooling city spaces, informing people of heat warning, and protecting citizens from being exposed to heat, would enhance overall livability, healthiness, and even economic state in East Asia.
