On March 28, 2025, a powerful earthquake hit Myanmar’s Sagaing Region, registering a moment magnitude of 7.7 (Richter scale 8.2). It was the strongest quake in Myanmar since its independence in 1948 and the most destructive in over a century. The tremors were felt as far as Bangkok, Thailand, causing building collapses and additional casualties.

Myanmar’s military government has reported 3,085 deaths, with 4,715 injured and 341 missing. However, independent media and international organizations warn that the real death toll could be much higher, possibly exceeding 4,000. The Burmese news outlet DVB estimated at least 3,756 fatalities, including 2,414 in Mandalay, one of the worst-hit areas. While state-run broadcaster MRTV reported 3,003 deaths, many question the accuracy of official figures.

Rescue operations have been slow, as the military prioritizes security over relief efforts. In Mandalay, soldiers were seen patrolling the streets, but there was little sign of organized rescue work. International aid agencies estimate that at least 50,000 people have been displaced and are in urgent need of assistance.

Thousands of buildings have collapsed, while many others remain dangerously unstable. Fearing aftershocks, many residents have been forced to sleep outdoors. Meanwhile, international relief efforts are gaining momentum, with countries such as South Korea launching aid campaigns. As the crisis unfolds, concerns continue to grow over Myanmar’s response and the speed of international assistance.
