In a surprising and historic moment, an Estonian student has won Korea’s Miss Chunhyang pageant—the first time in its 95-year history that a non-Korean has taken the crown.
The winner, Mai, is a student at Seoul National University and was one of 600 applicants from around the world. After a few rounds of selection, she was chosen as one of 38 finalists. What made her stand out wasn’t just her looks, but her genuine love for Korean culture. She’s fluent in Korean, understands traditions, and approached the competition with modesty and respect.
The Miss Chunhyang pageant, rooted in the famous Korean love story of Chunhyang, has been a symbol of traditional beauty and cultures. Until recently, it was open only to Korean women, but in 2024, the rules were expanded to welcome international applicants.
Mai’s win isn’t just about beauty—it’s a moment that reflects how Korean culture is evolving and expanding its spectrum. Many hope her story will inspire others around the world who share an appreciation for Korean traditions.
