South Korea has passed a bill to ban using smartphones in class, as the concern of social media’s influence was growing larger gradually. Despite social media being beneficial to students in various ways, it has been said that it distracts students from their academic and healthy life, especially at school.
This compelling law passed with 115 votes in favor out of 163 members present, and it will be implemented from March 2026. One primary reason for the bill is serious internet addiction among students. Majorities of lawmakers and teachers had concluded that separation from their smartphones would fix this problem.
As a matter of fact, a decent number of Korean schools have already implemented the same regulation, along with several European countries such as Finland and France. However, Korea is one of the few countries that has enacted such a ban into law, which is why it is attracting global attention.
Nowadays, the biggest concern of the parents is their children using their phones uncontrollably, since smartphones do not only distract them from a social life and studies, but they also have the possibility of exposing them to danger online. Hence, the enactment will be another huge step for Korea to solve various problems, consequently securing their well-being offline and online.
