This year, the Korean baseball team Hanwha Eagles advanced to the Korean Series for the first time in 19 years. Although they failed to win the championship, the 2025 season is still regarded as a great success for the club. The Eagles had gone through a long “dark age” since the late 2000s. Between 2008 and 2024, they reached the postseason only once — in 2018 — which shows how tough those years were.
One of the biggest factors behind their turnaround this season was the performance of their foreign pitchers. Cody Ponce and Ryan Weiss combined for 33 wins with impressive ERAs. In particular, Ponce dominated the league, winning four major pitching titles, the third such achievement in KBO history. He also received the Choi Dong-won Award, given to the league’s best pitcher, and is considered a strong candidate for this year’s MVP.
Recently, several outstanding KBO foreign players have moved to MLB, such as Eric Fedde. As a result, MLB scouts have been attending Hanwha Eagles games to observe both Ponce and Weiss. Some experts believe that Ponce may receive even better offers than Fedde did.
For the Hanwha Eagles, re-signing both Ponce and Weiss is crucial if they want to stay at the top next season. The club is expected to make its best possible offer within the KBO’s salary cap. According to the Eagles’ general manager, “We will provide the best contract conditions within our limits, but the players will make their final decisions after reviewing potential MLB offers.”As of now, Cody Ponce’s re-signing has become one of the hottest topics among KBO fans and media alike.
