More than 900,000 people evacuated vulnerable areas of the Philippines as Super Typhoon Fung-Wong, locally known as Uwan, began lashing the main island of Luzon, with work and classes suspended across several regions, including the capital, Manila.
According to the Philippine officials, the highest alert level of 5 was raised over southeastern areas. The typhoon blew into Aurora province Sunday night after setting off fierce rain and wind in northeastern Philippine provinces all day, with sustained winds of up to 185 kph and gusts of up to 240 kph.
Typhoon Koppu has approached the Pacific while the Philippines was still dealing with the devastation wrought by Typhoon Kalmaegi, which left 224 people dead in central provinces on Tuesday. Additionally, a group of villagers in the eastern province of Cataduanes drowned, and another died in the eastern Samar province.
Authorities in northern provinces said that typhoon Fung-Wong shut schools and most government offices on Monday and Tuesday. At least 325 domestic and 61 international flights have been canceled over the weekend. And more than 6,600 workers have been trapped in seaports due to the officials' prohibition of ships from venturing.
So far, the Philippine government has called an emergency rescue, and villagers and people were asked to seek shelter away from villages and towns at risk of floods.
