South Korea’s military shut down its loudspeakers towards North Korea, intending to ease prolonged tension on the Korean Peninsula. The South Korean decision intrigued netizens’ attention since the speakers were broadcasting anti-North Korea propaganda.
North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un, who is extremely sensitive to any outside criticism of the nation’s governance, didn’t immediately respond to this action. Nevertheless, the decision of the military indicated a possible change in the intimidating relationships between them. South Korea’s loudspeakers did not only broadcast propaganda regarding its neighboring country but also influential K-Pop song playlists. North Korea, which is renowned for repudiating interaction with foreign cultures especially any outside criticism, didn’t immediately respond to this action.
South Korea and North Korea have been keeping up with intimidating tension, which especially skyrocketed last year from May to November, with North Korea sending balloons filled with rubbish. This action was carried out to diminish the “unnecessary discomfort and tension” between the two nations caused by the loudspeakers. The fact that South Korea has voluntarily turned off the speakers seems as though they answered North Korea’s opinions.
In spite of the fact that North Korea hasn’t reacted to South Korea so far and it is challenging to speculate whether South Korea will start to keep up with its tradition, South Korea’s decision made a possible contribution to the ensuing relationships with North Korea.
