A colonial bridge in Myanmar that was once the world’s tallest railway bridge has been destroyed by anti-coup armed groups. A civil war has been destroying Myanmar since 2021, with the military battling ethnic armed organizations.
Representatives from the ruling military junta and anti-coup armed groups have blamed each other for the destruction of the bridge. According to the junta’s spokesperson, Zaw Min Tun, the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the people’s defense forces were responsible for the destruction of the bridge. A TNLA spokesperson rejected this and claimed that the Myanmar army tried to bomb our bases by using drones.
With a length of 300 meters and a height of 102 meters above a gorge, the structure is the highest bridge in Myanmar and was the tallest railway bridge in the world since it opened in 1901 during the British occupation. The bridge is located at the border of Nawnghkio and Kyaukme towns in northern Shan State. Videos and photos shared on social media showed that the bridge had partially collapsed and was destroyed.
